My frequent reading material is the sports section of the newspaper. The sentence structure for this NASCAR article is distinctive in that it has many dependent clauses followed by independent clauses. Other sentences are simple subject-verb sentences and others are compound sentences, two subject-verbs connected with an “and”. The sentences definitely vary in length. The ones with only one clause are the shortest. Some sentences even have dashes that act kind of like parentheses. The article uses a small example of parallelism but it still makes a good point, “One minute he was celebrating a second-place finish to Jimmie Johnson at Kansas, the next he was despondent.” The article is easy to read because the sentences do not become too complex. They never even go past two clauses. The article also uses many quotes. The quotes are usually long sentences, and there are short sentences in between. The balance makes it easy to read.
